Hello, we are Smart Talking Mediation
Meet the Smart Talking team
Let's talk

I understand the process of divorce and separation having gone through it myself a number of years ago. As such I am very aware of how challenging separation can be particularly where there are children involved. My personal experiences, as well as my 18 years of legal experience as a solicitor and mediator, equips me with skills to help parties through the most challenging of times.
Before I became a lawyer and mediator I did a degree in mental health and spent my early 20s working as a mental health nurse. As a result, I have significant experience of working with children and young people dealing with mental health issues, quite often precipitated by family breakdown. This experience has really assisted me in my work as a Child Inclusive Mediator, an area in which I specialise.
I qualified as a solicitor in 2006. I went on to train to be a family mediator and became accredited in 2010 before qualifying as what is now called a Child Inclusive Mediator in 2012. I trained as a work place mediator in 2014 and then became an accredited Civil, Commercial and Work Place mediator in 2020.
I have been a Board Member and Charitable Trustee of the Family Mediators Association for a number of year and I am currently Vice Chair of the FMA. I also sit on the West and North Yorkshire Family Justice Board as the Family Mediation representative for this region.
I also work as a PPC supervising other mediators which is hugely rewarding.
I have worked in a number of legal practices over the years from large regional firms to being a partner in two smaller firms. I joined forces with Alison in 2018 to create what is now Barnes Clark Family Law. Alison and I share the same passion, commitment and drive for client care.
When I am not working I am a very keen runner. I also love travelling with my family and all things Italian. I spend a lot of my weekends cheering my children on in their various sporting activities and taking part in park runs.

I understand that relationship breakdown can be painful, confusing and destabilising. It can be a challenge to know what to do next, how to go about it and where to seek help and support. Considering family mediation is a good place to start. It will enable you to explore your options following your separation, with a child centred approach, and help you make decisions that ensure that your future is a positive one.
For 25 years I practiced as a family law solicitor, owning my own practice for 13 years during that time. In 2014 I qualified as a family mediator and became an Accredited Mediator in 2016. I am also a PPC supporting other Family Mediators in their professional practice and I provide professional legal supervision to members of the legal profession.
In addition to being a family mediator I also practice as a therapist working with clients who are facing mental health challenges. This experience helps me ensure that I can provide a safe space for mediation clients to work together and find a way forward that works for them and their family as a whole. I co-mediate with Sally or Lee in complex mediations when the parties have either requested a co-mediation approach or when it is thought to be necessary in order to provide the parties with the support they need.
Outside of work I love walking, history, spending time with friends and family and gardening.
